My recent article on Félire Óengusso reconsiders the traditionally thorny question of the date of composition of the text. Most scholars will agree that the text dates to the early ninth century. There is disagreement on the correct date range, however. Most to date have accepted Rudolf Thurneysen’s proposed date range of 797 x 808 AD. This has primarily been contested by Pádraig Ó Riain, who favours a date closer to ca. 828 x 830 AD. In Dating Félire Óengusso I review the historical evidence and instead suggest that the text was likely written during the reign of Áed Oirdnide.
